In Vietnam, as part of Penta Prosthetics, I had the opportunity to work on ethnographical research that focused on understanding the lives of individuals with amputations. My primary role was to connect with the local people through in-depth interviews that were carefully conducted, alongside observations of their daily lives. Although I did not have proficiency in the Vietnamese language, I collaborated closely with translators, which allowed me to gain valuable insights into the experiences of those dealing with limb loss, their histories with prosthetics, and, importantly, their unique personalities. Our work involved engaging with patients in a hospital setting, as well as making visits to their homes, providing us with a more comprehensive understanding of their lives and circumstances.

Vietnam was a starting point for Penta which currently collects used prostheses to bring high-quality, low-cost prosthetic care to amputees all over the world.

Questionnaires were the base for the conversation but we always learned more.

We visited hospitals, various clinics, as well as several rehab centers. Engaging in conversations with the people there was truly eye-opening. The boy in the photo was nearing the end of his rehabilitation journey and was about to go back to school after spending several months in the rehab center, during which he was fitted with a prosthetic leg thanks to the support of the ICRC. Interestingly, he expressed a desire to remain in the hospital, where he had formed bonds with several other men who shared a room with him during their rehabilitation process. Among them, he felt a strong sense of belonging and comfort. In contrast, returning to school meant that he would face the reality of being the only one with an artificial leg, which he found intimidating.

Questionnaires were the base for the conversation but we always learned more.

In Vietnam, there is a significant stigma surrounding disability, which poses notable challenges for individuals living with such conditions. Part of the Penta mission involved organising of a comprehensive volunteer program, specifically designed for local high school students. This carefully structured program aims not only to educate them about various important issues related to disability, but also to actively encourage and inspire these young individuals to take meaningful action, ultimately fostering a sense of responsibility that can lead to positive changes within the community.
